When I arrived, the movie had started. já tinha começado

A ação mais antiga vai para o past perfect.

When I arrived, she left.	ela saiu quando cheguei
When I arrived, she had left.	ela já tinha saído

I had never seen snow before that trip.

She had already gone home.

Experiência até um ponto do passado.

I was tired because I had worked all day.

By the time we got there, they had eaten.

by the time = quando, até o momento em que

I'd gone	I had gone
I'd go	I would go

Depois de I'd: particípio = had · base = would.

When I arrived, she already left.	→	…she had already left.
I had went.	→	I had gone.
I have never seen snow before 2010.	→	I had never seen snow before 2010.
Did you had eaten?	→	Had you eaten?
I hadn't saw it.	→	I hadn't seen it.

Se a ordem está clara (before, after), o simple também serve:

After I finished, I left. = After I had finished, I left.

Use o past perfect quando a ordem não está óbvia.
